And the answer is ...

18 is the total number of Division I-A games appeared in by ALL Southern Miss defensive linemen (15 players including tackles, defensive ends, bandits, etc.) entering the 2008 season.

David Boyce - 1 game / 13 plays

Eric Phillips - 2 games

Anthony Gray - 5 games

Roshaad Byrd - 10 games / 137 plays

Also interesting is that among the returning defensive linemen, only Gray and Phillips weigh more than 250 pounds.

Seems this part of the cupboard was bare.

Very good stat AD. Phillips is truly a defensive end frame, only he is too dayem slow.

AD,

That is a great stat. It explains a lot about our defensive problems. No pass rush means tougher for secondary to cover receivers. With Barragan coming in and Phillips' switch we added people with weight in the middle, but not experience.

Paul, Phillips is not strong enough. Barragan is, but his legs are too dayem short, he can't run very fast. Gray is the only D lineman we have that has the strength ad speed to be a force. He is double teamed on practically every play!

Everyone should go pull their media guides and check out the personnel on the team. This is not a knock on our guys, but once you do that, I think you will be shocked, like I was, at the utter lack of Division I (A or AA) talent. If you are like me, you will not recognize many names. For example, we have 6 punters/kickers on the roster. While we have talent at the skill positions on offense, and a recognizable name or two on defense, over all, it appears that walk-ons are the rule, not the exception.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
