Can We Hire The ASU Radio Guys?

Postby baldeagle on Sat Sep 13, 2008 6:05 pm

They understand the game. Have a clear bias toward their Wolves. And are willing to acknowledge the opponent's good plays and players.
This has been a sad year at EP. We miss you 78, Lifer and whodat.

I guess you and I have different needs on announcing a game. Other than slipping to call their team the "tribe" they have been spot on.

It sounds like they have Don Knotts doing the play by play.

It's official... John Cox is just terrible. You'd think he was ASU's announcer.

I'm serious...I'm gonna rip Cox's trachea out next time I see him. This guy has never EVER learned to give the listening audience a play by play you can picture worth a crap...I mean. really...How the hell are we supposed to know what is happening and where the guy is when he does his.." He's got the ball and he's running down the sideline and breaks a tackle and still on his feet" routine and then after all of that he gives the line of scrimmage AFTER the QB goes under center for the next play....This guy has got to have a chemical imbalance in his tiny brain. Has no-one ever talked to him about that???

The ASU guys had pretty bad accents, but I thought they were pretty good. They at least knew what they were talking about.

It took Cox a full 10 seconds to say that it was Fletcher who caught the ball for a TD. And how difficult is it to say WHO those who are double out left and single out right are. We can't see them, tell us who the eff is in the game. It's ridiculous.

That TD to nobody was probably the worst tonight, but a close second was earlier in the game when we got the not-unusual "CAUGHT!...AND DROPPED!" on a big 3rd-down pass play. Every other announcer in America manages to just wait the extra half-second to let things actually play out before they make the call. Cox spends half of every broadcast correcting himself, yanking us around in the process.

My point exactly! I'll deal with accents. I'll deal with not knowing who's on the Southern Miss side. We have the worst radio guy in division one. Period.

At the end of the game, when we finally had a real interception that we didn't drop, it just didn't seem right. I kept waiting for him to say that we actually dropped it, or worse, that they actually caught it.

Okay, it's time to get rid of this idiot. We've been raising hell bout this clown for the last decade. I had folks calling me tonight from NC., Pa., and CA ......asking me to text them the game info so they didn't have to listen to John Cox and his crappy play-by-play antics. Guys, it's a new day at Southern Miss. Time to get rid of this piece of shit. He really is hurting this program.......and you all know it.

Its bad enough having to listen to the garbage spewing out of JC's mouth but then you've got st-st-st-st-studdering Vic to his side giving his ridiculous version of co-co-co-color co-co-co-commentary. I'd take Rick and Bubba that ASU had any day over our 2 clowns.

Before I got back home to watch the game online, I had to listen to the pregame on the radio. Purvis wrapped up his rundown by saying (and I'm paraphrasing) "We'll be back in a minute as the Golden Eagles take on the Arkansas State Red.....Now here's a message from the ISP Network."

My all-time favorite Cox line to this day is, after the opposing team fumbled, "Well, either they have it or they don't."

Mine is still this gem from the Florida game in '92, when we were either ahead or down by a score late in the 4th and UF had the ball:

Cox: "INTERCEPTED!!"

[my friends and I leap in celebration]

Cox: "...ALMOST!"

Listening to his play-by-play is like riding a daggum roller coaster.

Read the following as if you were an announcer and tell me how difficult it would be for him to do something similar before each play-

"2nd and 7 Southern Miss from the ASU 30...DeAndre wide left, Baptiste left slot, Morgan split right"..."Davis in the shotgun with Fletch to his left".

That tells you all you need to know to picture the play in your head. Instead it's-

"2nd down, double out left, single out right from a shotgun"

Pisses me off how excited they get when the other team does something good.

Speaking of classics 3 years ago @ the Pete Cox said "and that one will go foul" and followed it with "and that will get three runners in".......it was a 3 run home run ball by the opposing team. I was sitting in the Roost and listening on the radio could not believe what a heard..........idiot.

This was the first game in a long while that i haven't been able to watch the game and was totally dependent on Cox. i don't think i could do it again. It would probably be better to just see if we won on the news. He is so slow on giving out info that i just used his tone to figure out what happened. If he got excited it meant Ark St had done something good. i waited several seconds after the Willingham int before celebrating. Combine that with Vic complaining about the calls that go AGAINST the OPPOSITION and i was screaming, "WHO PAYS YOUR SALARY $%@#!!
Why can't Cox simply go "caught by Fletcher" or "caught by Nelson." Instead he says "caught at the...30...uh...31...uh...looks like the 30...30 yard line....Doe on the tackle...Nelson able to make the grab." You got to wade through all that to find out who made the catch!! And you still don't know how far!!! ok, i'll stop now.

I'm shocked USM did not replace them since LF's hiring. Cox & Vic were pretty tight with the last regime. Not to mention, they're really not good at all. He calls a game like a rat on acid.

Just for the record, the Houston announcers take the total Jackass award. I think I'd rather listen to our guys.

I don't listen to the games on the radio anymore. If I'm not in attendance or can't watch it on t.v. I just check the internet throughout the game to see what the score is. Listening to a game Cox is announcing is pure masochism and that just ain't my bag man.

Hot damn! We're going after another "entrenched institution" that has outlived his usefulness! Count me in!

Time for some opposition research... we need to find out where he goes to church, who his brother in law plays golf with, whether he's ever been kind to a child in the hospital, and if he's a great guy.

That way we'll be ready when the defenders bring up those amazing attributes as to why he's more than qualified to do play-by-play.
Hit 'em in the mouth!
