Aww....they should sound cocky...because we haven't done anything lately to make our opponents think otherwise...
Again..I am flabbergasted how little we intimidate folks nowadays....and if we go to Jonesboro with our newfound Gone with the Wind attitude (tomorrow is another day), we'll get our asses handed to us ala Rice, UCF and Cinci...
When did we lose our swagger? it really concerns me..

the gone with the wind attitude was gone last november. how on earth can you even say this team has a gone with the wind attitude? why are you continuing to label this team like the last few years? its not even close!

I think we have a case of Arkansas State fans that are on cloud 9 because they beat a bad A&M team (remember how we felt after beating Nebraska a few years ago, and Nebraska wasn't as bad as this Aggie team) and then waxed the floor with a terrible 1AA school (Texas State makes ULaLa look like USC). I don't think we are light years ahead of them becasue they have a decent football team, but I think their fans have the impression that they are better then they are right now. We probably won't blow them out, but we will win this game. It will be fun to see if their board has a meltdown on Sunday. Even better, if we do lose, can you imagine the meltdown that this place and BGN will have.

Don't think we are viewed as a bad team...but no one seems to think we have the "menace factor" we had only a few years back..
I remember when Bama and Auburn and FSU said "Uh oh" when facing USM...now they treat us like a UTEP, SMU or Tulane.
I believe LF WILL get the swagger back, but until I see us step up (and maybe it WILL be this week) , I see no reason to believe we won't play lackadaisacally, uptight and confused...
Once you lose that swagger (ask Miami....Notre Dame...Louisville...Texas A&M...) it ain't that easy to regain it by simply saying Abbrakadabra...

I've watched our team since 1959, so I think I actually just might know something every once in a while..
I'm not saying the Gone With the Wind attitude won't be gone with the wind this weekend....But after seeing us look like deer in the headlights last Saturday.....and again seeing what looks like a lack of urgency
on part of SOME players, I happen to be concerned..
I think we go 9-3 or 8-4, so I'm not so rattled I think all is lost....I just want to see us have that mental toughness that always set Southern Miss apart from other schools..
if ya think what I'm saying is some kind of critical review of your BFF LF (it's certainly not)...that's a personal problem you'll have to deal with...

NEW FLASH JB let that swagger disappear!
HE is on the golf course now.
Fedora is restoring order!
Sure will take some time but it is already surfacing. You may actually have to get out the house and go to a game to see it though. They don't show it on a ESPN ticker. It may have been hard to see it against the #9 team in college football, at their place, in front of 85K, with a freshman QB, and lots of other first timers on the field. But that attitude is gone for the most part IMO.
But seriously alot of yall need to quit labeling this as Same Ol Southern Miss, It is FAR from that.

you were not concerned with it when you BFF was the coach.

eagle78 wrote:no worm, you and a few others are on here rambling on about how this team has no fire or urgency. that they dont have the right attitudes. bla bla bla and you are basing this on what? one half, hell just a few series of plays at #9 auburn? give me a break. alot of you are not even giving this team a chance to spread their wings. . .

eaglfan81 wrote:There is a huge difference between our team having the deer in the headlights look against #9 Auburn and us playing Arkansas State. The two situations are not even remotely close. We were outmanned at Auburn. That won't be the case in Arkansas.
By the way, that deer in the headlights look disappeared after half time because our coaches did their job. I repeat, it won't happen this weekend.

kickingtee wrote:We shouldn't have that look against anybody. We were flat out FLAT. Even Fedora said we were very confused. Every play we were getting our azz whipped, and our attitude showed it. This has been a trend of ours for nearly 10 years. I have stated that, I think we overcome it this week, but if they whip our azz on a few possessions, you better hope we don't start having that look again. Your right several on this board have expressed this concern. Not one of them are placing any blame on the coaching staff. My word, they have their work cut out for them to get rid of this stinkin thinkin, and right now Coach Fedora does not have the depth he needs to completely eliminate it!

eaglfan81 wrote:Tee, you aren't going to be able to completely prepare a freshman or first time player for what they stepped into at Auburn. It is something that they have to experience and work through. They didn't look like that in the second half. The only players I saw quit in the second half were a couple of receivers that aren't first year players, and if Torris would get his act together, one of those would be on the bench. That look that you mention might have had something to do with being completely outmatched. Our players stuck in there and made a game out of what would have been a very embarassing blow out under the other guy. Again, Arkansas state is no Auburn. They are a good team, but they are not Auburn.

and Rice was no Auburn....![]()
81 calm down...no one is saying we won't win this weekend....we're just saying, FROM HAVING OBSERVED USM FOOTBALL FOR A LONG TIME, certain signs from this team don't look good WHEN GOING ON DA ROAD..
I fully expect to kick Boise AND ECU's ass...but only IF and WHEN we get a better mental attitude because WE WILL NOT INTIMIDATE FOLKS ANYMORE...
I hope it all begins anew this weekend...I really do...Sheeesh...
Rolando Barragan via Patrick Magee wrote: "It was one of those days you have to work," Barragan said. "We have to bounce back from Auburn. As a defense, we decided we had to let it go in practice."
For Barragan, recovering from the 27-13 loss on the road isn't as easy at is for some.
"We feel like we let that one slip away," the California native said. "It kind of sits in my stomach for three days. Today, it's outs of there. I have to start watching some NFL films to get away from it all, or I'll call my brother back home. It's been sitting there for three days but now we have to get ready for Arkansas State. Hopefully we'll come out strong and come out on top."

read what you wrote ...
in the first game we looked like y
in the first half we looked like X
in the second half we looked like y again
So why is everyone so scared and afraid that we are going to look like y anymore?
At least shortly after we looked like x we didn't get that deer in head lights look up at the score board from the HBC.
Even Reggie Collier said today that he was start struck the first time he went into Tallahassee (and he wasn't even playing) and then when he first played in that atmosphere at Bama. Its a part of the game.
Give them a break a little time to get this thing going. . . hell most of you gave the last one a break for 17 years!
